Thrombolytics / Thrombolytic Therapy

While we usually think of neuro-musculoskeletal structures for painful conditions there are clearly other factors that play a role. For example, with claudication calf or leg pain is due to Peripheral Arterial Disease (hardening of the arteries). Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) can also cause leg pain, but is due to blood clots in the veins ratherthen a neuro-musculoskeletal structure. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occurs as a result of compression of the Subclavian artery or vein as they pass from the neck into the arm. It presents with complaints of arm pain, weakness and numbness, especially in the small and ring fingers.

Prolotherapy Injections

Prolotherapy involves the use of medication injected into injured ligaments for the purpose of re-growing them. Since the ligaments actually re-grow with this treatment (much like a scab heals skin) the term prolotherapy, from proliferate, was coined to describe the treatment. The following Prolotherapy article is a review on the topic and was published by Dr. Robert Schwartz of Piedmont Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, P.A. Greenville, S.C.

Abstract

Proliferative therapy (prolotherapy) is the process whereby dextrose, P25G or sodium morrhuate is injected into ligaments in order to produce a proliferating response of that ligament. The purpose of these injections is to strengthen ligamentous structures and relieve pain. A review of the literature is provided and a retrospective study presented which demonstrates a 66% reduction of sacroiliac low back pain in two-thirds of the patients who received this form of treatment.

Disease Management: Reducing Total Load

Nutritional, Environmental and Immune System Relationships

Total load refers to the total number of factors that prevent you from getting well, or staying well. Most people have an intuitive desire to reduce total load, but given today’s complex world, it is not always easy to know just how to do that.

Let’s start out with some of the basics: enhancing proper nutrition and reducing harmful environmental factors. Without proper nutrition, your body cannot function properly. On the surface this seems obvious enough, but it takes a little extra knowledge to understand that low magnesium levels can lead to blood vessel spasm, result in migraines, vasomotor abnormalities (such as cold hands and feet or Raynaud’s syndrome), peripheral vascular disease (hardening of the arteries), and even heart attacks.
