Non-Narcotic Pain Pharmacology

Despite the long-standing availability of pain medication, confusion still exists as to which medication is best for the treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal pain. This is due in large part to a relative lack of understanding of pain receptor pharmacology and the number of agents available. This article will review various non-opiate medications that can be used to treat pain.

Several neuropathic disorders share similar pain perception pathways, including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, post herpetic neuralgia, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), post surgical/traumatic neuropathy, and toxic and idiopathic neuropathies. Medications directed toward these pathways can also provide relief for neck and low back pain, acute and chronic ligamentous strain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other muscular aches and pains.

Thrombolytics / Thrombolytic Therapy

While we usually think of neuro-musculoskeletal structures for painful conditions there are clearly other factors that play a role. For example, with claudication calf or leg pain is due to Peripheral Arterial Disease (hardening of the arteries). Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) can also cause leg pain, but is due to blood clots in the veins ratherthen a neuro-musculoskeletal structure. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occurs as a result of compression of the Subclavian artery or vein as they pass from the neck into the arm. It presents with complaints of arm pain, weakness and numbness, especially in the small and ring fingers.

Regenerative Medicine: A Holistic Approach for Musculoskeletal Disorders

Numerous forms of regenerative medicine exist today. From a musculoskeletal perspective the first step should embrace the importance of nutrition. While several procedures are available to enhance cell regeneration, none of them will be as effective if the body is nutritionally deficient. While numerous supplements are available, we recommend Juice Plus. This is a whole food fruits and vegetable extract with several medical school studies that demonstrate Juice Plus absorption and cell integration of the underlying nutrients.
