Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) For Spine, Hip, and Knee Pain

Radiofrequency ablation (or “RFA” for short) for spine, hip, and knee pain is a minimally invasive, non-surgical approach to managing pain typically arising from the spine or joints.  Targeting the area around the spine or joint, RFA involves the heating, or ablation, of the appropriate nerves involved in the transmission of pain.  While this may sound a bit scary, it is actually quite straight forward and very well tolerated.

It is important to note that there is a selection process before going forth with the ablation.  Not every patient is a suitable candidate.  Prior to undergoing the definitive treatment, simple blocks are performed at the area suspected of generating the pain as a means of confirmation.   The patient is then asked to pay attention to the extent of their pain relief as well as any improvement in function in the diagnostic period.  If the patient has an excellent response, RFA becomes an appropriate option.

Fluoroscopic and Ultrasound Guided Injections

Fluoroscopy (or “fluoro”) is simply a form of imaging much like an x-ray with the added advantage of capturing real-time moving images when necessary.  This makes it extremely useful in variety of ways.  It can be used for purely diagnostic purposes as well as intraoperatively.  Flouroscopically guided injections are frequently done in both an out-patient surgical center setting or if equipped in your doctor’s office.   Usually fluoroscopic suite fees apply (these are in addition to the cost of fluoroscopy itself).

Are Topical Creams Effective For Neuropathy?

You feel a tingling or slight burning sensation in your hands or feet and you know it’s a symptom of your neuropathy. These areas, especially your feet, tend to be targeted first because the nerves leading down to those extremities are the longest and the easiest to damage. But at the moment, you know its not a sign for major concern, you just want relief from the discomfort or pain as soon as possible.

Supplements are one way to treat these symptoms, but you don’t really know when they’ll start working and if there will be side effects. By taking any oral medication, you are prone to drowsiness, dizziness or simply lethargy. So what could you do to relieve the pain without all the other baggage? Well, there’s topical creams. They can be applied right onto the pained area usually without fuss and are usually better accepted by patients because they are painless.
