Thoracic Mid Back Pain

Thoracic mid back pain refers to pain from the region of your spine between the bottom of the neck and just above the low back.   Many people just think of this area as their back but thoracic pain is really that portion of your back that has connections to your ribs.

Persistent thoracic spinal pain can be debilitating.  It can be difficult to treat and difficult to diagnosis what is actually causing it.   That is because there are some many possibilities that might be the root cause. Just like in the neck or low back, thoracic pain may be due to nerve root irritation, degenerative disk disease, herniated disk, or even spinal cord damage.   Compression fractures, shingles and other viral neuritis infections, mechanical issues related to the ribs, and scoliosis are other common examples.

Weather Sensitive Pain

Weather sensitive pain is caused by the sympathetic nervous system

Many people believe that cold weather joint pain and barometric pressure headaches are a myth, a complaint taught to them by their parents to explain why they were grouchy or not feeling well on any particular day. Recently, however, the medical community has come on board, reporting that the phenomenon is real.

What is confusing is that the barometric pressure is the determining factor, not the weather we see outside at the moment. Most often a falling barometer is the culprit, although in a minority of cases the opposite can be true. The effect is also more pronounced the colder it is.

Sympathetic Nerve Fibers

There are many kinds of nerve fibers. Two that are easy to understand are the motor fibers that let us move and the sensory fibers that let us feel. Another important group of fibers that is harder to understand includes the sympathetic nerve fibers.

Sympathetic Efferents

The sympathetic nerves — also called the “C fiber” or “small fiber” nerves — arise from little collections of nerve clusters called ganglia. These are located outside of the spinal cord. The ganglia can function entirely independently (automatically) from the rest of the nervous system.
