Can Regenerative Therapy Help My RSD/CRPS?

Stem cell therapy help my RSD

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, is a painful disorder that is a result of a malfunctioning nervous system. Particularly, the autonomic nervous system is affected. This is the portion of the nervous system that monitors injury sites, which is why RSD/CRPS tends to develop after a traumatic incident or injury. RSD/CRPS causes sufferers to experience hypersensitivity and increased pain in reaction to a stimulus, or sometimes no stimulus at all. RSD/CRPS is notoriously difficult to control and there are often no good alternatives, however, at Piedmont Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, we offer several treatment approaches, some of which are new – Regenerative Treatment for RSD/CRPS is one of them.  Please keep in mind that the FDA distinguishes “Stem Cell” therapy from other regenerative therapies and they also restrict the use of Stem Cell therapy as an approved treatment.

If you or a loved one is suffering from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (RSD/CRPS), then you know that getting up in the morning, day to day, isn’t always easy. This is not because the doctor is withholding information, but because the diagnosis is a difficult one and most doctors are not that familiar with all of the aspects of it.

What is RSD/CRPS?

What is RSD

Imagine that you’re playing soccer with your local team or you’re out for a hike with friends. Everything is going well until you trip and land on your foot wrong. You’ve twisted your ankle and it ends up being quite sore with a burning sensation for the next few days.

Weeks later, if the pain has not subsided and your ankle and foot is now swelling, changing color and abnormally sweating you are definitely going to be concerned. In addition, if you notice that you are afraid to touch the area out of fear of making symptoms worse, then surely you know that this just can’t be right. One likely explanation of these symptoms is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also known as Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).  For some reason the sympathetic nervous system, that portion of the nervous system that monitors injury sites, has simply gone nutty.  RSD/CRPS almost always begins after an identifiable event such as a crush injury, torn ligament, or fracture, and always results in excessive pain to a stimulus or even hypersensitive pain when there is no stimulus.
