Not All Breast Thermograms Are Alike

Not all breast thermograms are alike. Breast Thermography is a complimentary imaging study that looks for physiologic changes that may affect breast health.  It is not a replacement for structural studies such as Mammography, MRI, or Ultrasound.  Unlike structural studies Breast Thermography can evaluate the presence of increased heat, vascularity, temperature asymmetries,  lymphatic congestion, and other metabolic factors such as hormone imbalance or hepatic congestion that have been associated with  breast health risk.  Since Brest Thermography is a physiologic study and can assess so many variables it is very important to make sure that you get the study done by an office that follows internationally peer reviewed guidelines and is read by a physician who is certified by an independent medical society dedicated toward the advancement of Medical Thermology.   At Piedmont Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PA in Greenville, South Carolina we are proud to follow the Guidelines For Breast Thermal Imaging  as written by the American Academy of Thermology (AAT) and to have been part of the writing process for the same.   Results are interpreted and then reviewed with you immediately after the study is completed by Dr. Schwartz, a Fellow and Board Member of the AAT.  Learn more about Breast Thermology and its benefits at piedmontpmr.com.

Fibromyalgia Care In Greenville

Greenville Rocks!   If you have been in Greenville for any length of time you know that it has transformed itself into a real destination.  People come to visit Greenville from all over in order to enjoy its vibrant downtown, great restaurants, parks, and yes, for Fibromyalgia care.  Piedmont Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PA is  proud to offer Fibromyalgia Care in Greenville.  I also serve as Medical Director for the Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital System’s Fibromyalgia program.  It may be the only one of its kind in the country.  Just being a fully recognized and accepted program inside a hospital system is unique for Fibromyalgia in and of itself. We have traditional restorative therapy as part of the offering but after that the program is far from typical.   As Medical Director patients are seen in my office with an emphasis on both diagnosing and treating the root causes (there is no singular cause for Fibromyalgia) of each patient’s condition with the goal of restoring health.  There is no silver bullet, and it takes time and commitment from both the myself and the afflicted, but with this approach we have been able to improve quality of life in the majority of our patients. Plus we have a medical staff that is sensitized to the diagnosis, key specialists that have agreed to participate as members of the program, and multiple options for access for those who have financial restrictions.   I am proud of our outcomes and think you will be too.  If you have Fibromyalgia all you need to do is make an appointment and come ready to do what it takes to get well.  Learn more about our approach to Fibromyalgia at piedmontpmr.com.

Relief For Post Mastectomy Pain

As if having to go through the diagnosis  and treatment of breast cancer isn’t enough those who are left with  post mastectomy pain can find that they have never recovered their quality of life.  Since the breast tissue is either gone or altered many of the traditional approaches to pain control are ineffective.   And while there are plenty of pain management specialists out there most are focused on backs and necks, or chronic arm and leg pain.  Few have taken an active interest in post mastectomy pain since the tools they usually employ are not directed to that part of the body.  Also since breast cancer survivors typically want to celebrate life the idea of have a spinal cord stimulator, morphine pump, or getting hooked on opiates for pain control is just not appealing.  They would rather find the root cause of the pain and do what ever can be done to fix it, minimize it, and learn to live with it so that it does not control their life.   That is exactly what we do at Piedmont Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PA.   First we find out why you have pain.  Post mastectomy pain isn’t always from the mastectomy itself.  It is often from reconstructive surgery, implants, radiation or side effects of chemotherapy.  There may be associated nerve injury, muscle spasm or ligamentous strain.  Clotting disorders, hidden or smoldering infection, and inflammation can all be part of the mix.  Several diagnostic tools can be done to help determine which of these factors, alone or in combination, are contributing to the problem.  Electrodiagnostics help find sensory and motor nerve damage, sympathetic skin response studies are used to evaluate the sympathetic nerves which are responsible for burning and weather sensitive pain, and Musculoskeletal Ultrasound is a great tool to evaluate for muscle, tendon, or ligament damage that can refer pain into the chest wall and residual or reconstructed breast tissue. Breast Thermal imaging is another physiologic test that can be used as a breast risk health assessment to evaluate lymphatic and ductal congestion, hormone imbalance, neovascularity, and hepatic overload.  In short there are plenty of ways to find out why you hurt.  And once you know what is wrong there even more options to treat the root cause of the pain.  Learn more at piedmontpmr.com.
